The Tape-Recorded Interview: A Manual for Field Workers in Folklore and Oral History by Edward D. Ives,
Since 1980, The Tape-Recorded Interview has been an essential resource for folklorists and oral historians - indeed, for anyone who uses a tape recorder in field research. When this book was first published, the reel-to-reel recorder was the favored format for fieldwork. Because the cassette recorder has almost completely replaced it, Ives has revised the first chapter, "How a Tape Recorder Works", accordingly and has included a useful discussion of the differences between analog and digital recording. He has also added a brief section on video, updated the bibliography, and reworked his original comments on tape cataloguing and transcription. As in the first edition, Ives's emphasis is on documenting the lives of common men and women. He offers a careful, step-by-step tour through the collection process - finding informants, making advance preparations, conducting the actual interview, obtaining a release - and then describes the procedures for processing the taped interview and archiving such materials for future use. He also gives special treatment to such topics as recording music, handling group interviews, and using photographs or other visual material during interviews.

Timecode: A User's Guide by John Ratcliff,
Timecode: A User's Guide by John Ratcliff,
Recent radical changes in timecode technology, location shooting and post-production working practices have been brought about by the fragmentation of the television programme making industry and by a dramatic increase in affordable digital transmission and editing equipment and systems. With the expansion of non-traditional television service producers (cable, satellite and video-on-demand) almost anything hoes as far as shooting and editing formats are concerned. Timecode: A User's Guide is an indispensable reference for anyone needing to get to grips with the many aspects of timecode, whether in-house or on location. Taking into account these changes this book has now been brought completely up to date to include: * timecode and DVD, LTC & VITC in HANC packets in the serial digital TV interfaces * timecode in IEEE1395 (Firewire) * timecode and digital video cassettes * new recording formats of DVD, DV mini cassettes and D6 are included * 4:3 scanning for wide-screen films - standards updated * new material to cover new working practices * new appendices to cover the global LF time data transmissions and time data embedded in BBC transmissions Advice is also given on avoiding and remedying faults and errors.

Digital video recorder - A digital video recorder (DVR) is a device that records video to a digital storage medium. The term DVR may be used to describe a piece of equipment such as a Personal Video Recorder (PVR) or a CCTV DVR.

Video tape recorder - A video tape recorder (VTR), is a tape recorder that can record video material. The video cassette recorder (VCR), where the videotape is enclosed in a user-friendly cassette shell, is the most familiar type of VTR known to consumers.

PCM adaptor - A PCM adaptor is a device used for recording digital audio in the PCM format, which in turn connects to a video cassette recorder (acting as a transport) for storage and playback of the digital audio information.

The recording could be played back by tracing a needle through the collection process - finding informants, making advance preparations, conducting the actual interview, obtaining a release - and then describes the procedures for processing the taped interview and archiving such materials for future use. However, disc records were easier and cheaper to mass produce. It used a membrane (which vibrated in response to sound) attched to a pen, which traced a line roughly corresponding to the sound wave form on to a moving roll of paper.
