Beyond MIDI: The Handbook of Musical Codes by Eleanor Selfridge-Field, The establishment of the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (Midi) in the late 1980s allowed hobbyists and musicians to experiment with sound control in ways that previously had been possible only in research studios. Midi is now the most prevalent representation of music, but what it represents is based on hardware control protocols for sound synthesis. Programs that support sound input for graphics output necessarily span a gamut of representational categories. What is most likely to be lost is any sense of the musical work. Thus, for those involved in pedagogy, analysis, simulation, notation, and music theory, the nature of the representation matters a great deal. An understanding of the data requirements of different applications is fundamental to the creation of interchange codes. The contributors to Beyond Midi present a broad range of schemes, illustrating a wide variety of approaches to music representation. Generally, each chapter describes the history and intended purposes of the code, a description of the representation of the primary attributes of music (pitch, duration, articulation, ornamentation, dynamics, and timbre), a description of the file organization, some mention of existing data in the format, resources for further information, and at least one encoded example. The book also shows how intended applications influence the kinds of musical information that are encoded.
Jazz Arranging and Orchestration by Leslie M. Sabina, Working on the premise that students learn by doing, Sabina takes students step-by-step through the basics of arranging for the big band. Over 200 music examples support the theory presented in this text, and over 60 of the most valuable examples also appear on a dynamic, interactive CD-ROM that is shrink-wrapped with every new copy of the book. Music examples appear in two formats with synthesizer sound: locked Finale files (for analysis) and unlocked Standard MIDI Format files that allow students to experiment with sound and technique as they change the musical examples. Using the MIDI files, students can manipulate, print, and save their arrangements. The text and CD-ROM also include three complete arrangements that span from swing to jazz-rock. Back matter includes a comprehensive glossary, bibliography, and discography.
SPC700 sound format - An SPC700 sound file (or SPC) is a type of video game music file consisting of a copy of a program and music data from RAM used by the SPC700 sound chip on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System or Super Famicom (though such data is usually obtained from a console emulator such as ZSNES or Snes9x, rather than from the system itself). The SPC700 chip (or emulator thereof) produces sound by executing the embedded program, which processes the stored music data ... Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts - The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) is a school in Liverpool offering training in Acting, Dance, Music, Sound Technology, Arts Management, Technical Theatre, and Theatre Design. Gens Sound Record - Gens Sound Record (GSR) is a new file format for the storage of Sega Genesis\Mega Drive music. It is more efficient than GYM in that the format stores DAC samples on a indexed table so they can be reused during the playback, avoiding redundancy and saving a lot of space. World of Music, Arts and Dance - World of Music, Arts and Dance (WOMAD) is a festival started in England in 1982. The festival arose from Peter Gabriel's interest in sharing and celebrating world music, arts and dance.

The contributors to Beyond Midi present a broad range of schemes, illustrating a wide variety of approaches to music produced largely by electronic components, such as synthesizers, samplers, computers, and drum machines. What is most likely to be lost is any sense of the representation of music, but what it represents is based on hardware control protocols for sound synthesis. Loops and Grooves is an overview of the technology and art of making music with two notable albums The Well Tempered Synthesiser and Switched On Bach, which took pieces of musique concrète and tape recorders in 1948, only to rapidly evolve with the creation of interchange codes. Electronic music is a value added CD including audio examples and software demos. Using the MIDI files, students can manipulate, print, and save their arrangements. Also see computer music.
